Krav Maga has a philosophy emphasizing threat neutralization, in sync defensive and invasive maneuvers, and combativeness. Krav Maga is used by the IDF Special Forces units and distinct closely related variations have been developed and followed by law enforcement and intelligence organizations, Mossad, Shin Bet, FBI, SWAT units of the NYPD and United States special operations forces. There are diverse organizations teaching revolutions of Krav Maga internationally.
Close combat is the common term for combat within close range. It may include lethal and nonlethal methods across a “range of violence” or within a “continuation of force” as established by rules of engagement. Unarmed close combat is irregularly called combative. Close combat with weapons may be called close quarter battle at the squad level. Current NATO terminology is to use MOUT for higher-level planned and tactical considerations of urban warfare or MOOTW for “military operations other than war” such as peacekeeping or emergency relief.
Boxing is a combat sport and martial art in which two people fight using their fists. Boxing is consistently supervised by a referee engaged in during a chain of one- to three-minute intervals called rounds and the boxers altogether of similar weight. There are three ways to win; if the adversary is knocked out and unable to get up before the referee counts to ten seconds (a Knockout, or KO) or if the rival is regarded as too injured to resume (a Technical Knockout, or TKO). If there is no stoppage of the fight before a coincided number of rounds, a winner is fixed on one or the other by the referee’s conclusion or by judges’ scorecards.
Wrestling is an early martial art that uses squeezing type skills such as clinch fighting, throws and take downs, joint locks, pins and other pressing holds. A wrestling bout is a physical rivalry, between two (occasionally more) competitors or sparing partners, who attempt to gain and maintain a superior position. There are a wide range of styles with varying rules with both traditional historic and modern styles. Wrestling executions have been incorporated into other martial arts as well as military hand-to-hand combat systems.
The basic meaning of the term close combat relates to a close battle between two or more combatants. Synonyms for close combat at that meaning are the medieval Melee and modern Close quarter’s battle (generally compressed CQB). Military techniques mainly distinguished as close combat are Shock invasions and especially the Charge tactic using bayonets, dueling with swords and up above dogfights between fighter aircraft. Urban warfare is thought of as a warfare environment saturated with close combats.
In this sense, close combat generally relates to people fighting outside a military environment. Hand to hand combat is commonly carried out without the use of firearms, but using the body and every now and then utilizing cold weapons. The knowledge of martial arts is quite essential for an adequate application of hand to hand combat. Most modern armies train their soldiers, especially those belonging to Special Forces, for close quarters combat. The use of hand to hand combat in the military yet deems the differentiation between the two meanings of close combat.
